LASIK surgery continues to be a popular and extremely successful service line through Eye Consultants of Atlanta’s Piedmont Better Vision program. Piedmont Better Vision is a specialized group of Eye Consultants of Atlanta doctors who are LASIK experts. They perform the procedure to reverse myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, often restoring a patient’s vision to 20/20 or better just one day after surgery.

LASIK patients of Eye Consultants of Atlanta’s Piedmont Better Vision program run the gamut from pilots to professional athletes and all points in between. For example, the following patients may have different backgrounds, but the end result of LASIK surgery remains the same for both: life changing.

Jill Malino, a 42-year-old Atlanta mother of three, recalls awakening in the middle night to the sound of her dog barking. Hopping out of bed, Malino went to check on the noise, as well as her 15-year-old daughter’s spend-the-night party.

She soon discovered a group of uninvited boys had crashed the sleepover. “I couldn’t see who the kids were, because I didn’t have my glasses on or contacts in,” she recalls. “So I called my eye doctor the next day and said, ‘I think it’s time for LASIK.’”

The literal wake-up call found Malino receiving a LASIK evaluation and the eventual procedure. “The experience was super easy,” Malino says regarding the latter. “The doctor talked me through the whole thing and made me feel very comfortable the entire time. And before you know it, you’re done.”

The next day, Malino began noticing positive changes in her vision. Today, she can keep an eye on everything from the family pet to her children without the aid of glasses or contact lenses.

“The results are amazing,” Malino says. “If I have to get up in the middle of the night, I can see things clearly. I had the nighttime ritual of taking out my contacts and the world becoming blurry, but that is no longer the case.”

Kia Hickson, a 44 year-old retired military veteran from Covington, had her own reasons for looking into LASIK. Primarily, it was due to her profession as a digital radiographer. Hickson currently works as a contractor for the U.S. Army and Air Force, inspecting vehicles and other equipment for structural integrity in order to avoid “catastrophic failure.”

“I’m constantly looking at a screen or a monitor,” Hickson explains. “My eyes are my job. I’ve been doing this for 24 years, and I’d like to keep doing it.”

The first signs she noticed were dry eyes and blurry vision. Reading became increasingly more difficult, and the last straw took place when Hickson began having difficulty driving at night.

She said she knew she had to do something, but the fact her livelihood depends on good vision allowed Hickson to be weary of LASIK surgery. However, with the reassurance and professionalism she received from her ophthalmologist before and during the procedure, she was quickly put at ease.

Mere hours after her surgery, Hickson says her vision began improving. The next morning, she awoke, clearly seeing the world around her.

Hickson says Eye Consultants of Atlanta’s Piedmont Better Vision program changed everything for her.

“LASIK has opened up my ability to do my job better without having headaches and pain, and reaching for my readers,” Hickson says. “Today all of those challenges have gone away. The greatest gift is being able to see. Eye Consultants of Atlanta’s Piedmont Better Vision program gave me that, and I’m so excited.”
