On occasion, inflammation of the optic nerve is related to a condition known as Optic Neuritis. This is a condition that is sometimes, but not always, related to Multiple Sclerosis. This typically presents with an acute painful loss of vision that is most common in young females. In most instances, follow up studies with an MRI and often times, full neurologic evaluation with lumbar puncture is necessary to determine long time treatment. Acutely, intravenous steroids may be helpful.
