What Is Double Vision?

Double vision, or as physicians may say, “diplopia,” is characterized by the sight of two images rather than one. This condition is often caused by a muscular or neurological failure. Yet, sometimes, it is caused by an irregular cornea shape.

There are two types of diplopia or double vision: monocular and binocular. Monocular occurs when one eye experiences double vision. Binocular occurs when both eyes are perceiving two images simultaneously.

The symptoms of double vision include:

  • Seeing double (intermittent or constant; near or far; variable or unchanging)
  • Trouble focusing
  • Blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue

Treatment for Double Vision

Since double vision is primarily caused by muscular and neurological problems, it is essential to seek treatment in order to improve vision. In order to detect whether the diplopia is binocular or monocular a visual acuity test must be administered. From there, a further investigation should occur, delving into the cause of this impairment. It is important to note there are many reasons why one may experience double vision. For this reason, it is essential to consult a physician if experiencing double vision.
