A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the cornea (a part of the surface of the eye). The cornea is located just in front of the iris and helps refract light in the vision process. A scratch to the cornea can be a very irritating problem to deal with and can range from moderate to severe.
There are various ways one can scratch your cornea. The most common way a corneal abrasion occurs is when something makes its way into your eyelid (such as dirt, sand, dust, torn contact lenses, etc.). Yet there are other ways this can happen, as well. Mostly, these are caused by physical contact with the eye such as by poking and rubbing. In fact, some people naturally have weak corneas and thus rubbing their eyes too hard can scratch/damage it.
