Eye Consultants of Atlanta have committed more than over fifty years earning the trust of patients across the Atlanta metro area and beyond. Our number of offices and the range of our physicians’ services have grown over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is our commitment to delivering the very best vision for our patients.
Cataracts are one of the many conditions that our experienced ophthalmologists address. From diagnosis and management to cataract surgery, the cataract specialists at Eye Consultants of Atlanta are dedicated to ensuring your best vision for years to come.
What Are Cataracts?
Just behind the pupil sits the eye’s natural lens, helping to focus light onto the retina in the back of the eye. This information is then sent to the brain and results in the images we see. The lens is a flexible disc that changes shape like a camera’s zoom lens to focus on objects as near and far away as necessary.
As most of us reach our mid to late forties, the lens begins to naturally lose its flexibility, hence the need for reading glasses or bifocal (multifocal) lenses.
However, over time, the lens may also become cloudy, making it difficult for the light to pass through and causes a gradual loss of vision. This is called a cataract, and it can occur in one or both eyes. Although most cataracts develop as the eye ages naturally, they can also be the result of trauma, genetics, prior surgeries, disease, or, in some cases, a congenital defect.
Symptoms of Cataracts
- Cloudy or blurry vision
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Poor night vision, including halos
- Needing brighter lights to read
- Yellowing and dimming of colors
- Frequent prescription changes
Cataract Diagnosis
and Management
The beginnings of a cataract can be detected and diagnosed during a full comprehensive eye exam. In the early stages, cataracts can be managed to a certain degree by adjusting the patient’s prescription, using brighter lights around the home, and avoiding certain activities like driving at night, but the only permanent way to treat vision loss from cataracts is cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is one of the oldest and most common surgical procedures in the world. These days, it’s safer than ever. At Eye Consultants of Atlanta, our experienced cataract surgeons use the latest techniques and technology to perform cataract surgery. We also offer the CATALYS Precision Laser System, which makes cataract surgery more precise, customized, and comfortable than ever before, and our methods even lead to a more rapid visual recovery for our patients.
During cataract surgery, the clouded natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). While the most basic IOLs simply replace the lens and will still necessitate the use of corrective eyewear for some or all distances, more advanced premium IOLs have the capability to provide better vision while decreasing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

While standard IOLs are monofocal — that is, they provide clear vision at just one distance — a premium IOL can do much more by greatly reducing or eliminating the need for glasses after surgery. We carry a variety of premium IOL options, including presbyopia-correcting IOLs and toric IOLs.
Before undergoing cataract surgery, our cataract surgeons sit down with every patient to discuss their needs and determine which IOL will be the best fit for their lifestyle.
