in Atlanta, GA
At Eye Consultants of Atlanta, we’re firmly committed to delivering quality eye care to patients across the Atlanta metro area and beyond. The history of our practice spans over fifty years, and during that time, we’ve expanded both the breadth of our specialties and our number of convenient locations. What hasn’t changed is our dedication to providing you with the highest standard of service.
That commitment is upheld by our board-certified and fellowship-trained physicians, who use the latest methods and technology to perform advanced eye procedures. When you decide to have cataract surgery, we can make sure your experience is memorable.
The natural lens of the eye is located behind the pupil and helps to bend light that comes into it onto the retina, a crucial step in the process of vision. It also changes shape to focus on objects nearby or in the distance, but over time, this lens can break down and become cloudy. This is a cataract.
Cataracts are extremely common; in fact, half of all Americans will have developed cataracts by the age of 80. While there are ways to manage cataracts in their early stages, cataract surgery is the only permanent way to restore vision loss.
What is Cataract Surgery?
During cataract surgery, the eye’s clouded lens is surgically removed and replaced with an artificial lens, commonly referred to as an “IOL”. Cataract surgery is a routine outpatient procedure, one of the most common surgeries performed worldwide.
That doesn’t mean that all cataract cases are the same. The experience of the surgeon, along with the technology they use to perform the procedure, play a role in your experience, your recovery, and how you see for the rest of your life.

Advanced Surgical and Diagnostic Technology
We’re proud to be the first practice in Atlanta to use the CATALYS® Precision Laser System, allowing our surgeons to perform a more precise surgery than ever before!
Using advanced 3D imaging to make a multi-dimensional map of the eye, the CATALYS® system uses a specialized laser specifically designed to optimize the outcomes of cataract surgery. This laser creates specialized incisions with superior precision, then breaks up the cataract into tiny pieces for gentler, easier removal, with little to no discomfort for our patients. This also allows for faster recovery times.
It’s not just our surgical systems that are state-of-the-art: We also use several diagnostic and measurement tools to ensure we completely understand your eyes. Our topographers measure the surface of your eye, while our optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical biometry technology allow us to clearly see the inner workings and structures of the eye.
Standard and
Premium IOLs
Your surgeon will discuss your IOL options before you schedule surgery. “Standard” IOLs restore vision lost as a result of the cataract, while premium IOLs have the capability to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Premium cataract surgery has the potential to reduce or eliminate your dependence on eyewear after surgery, but the premium lenses that best fit your needs depend on your current vision and eye health.
This is where your surgeon’s experience is truly key, because the lens type and placement will determine your visual results. For example, for patients who choose a lens designed to correct astigmatism, the lens has to be inserted at just the right angle. If it’s off rotation by even the smallest margin, it won’t result in totally clear vision.
Cataract Surgery Questions
A: People start to form cataracts after age 50, as cataracts are mostly age related. There are some cases of cataracts developing earlier in life, but most people develop them after age 60. Early cataracts require no intervention. Surgery is only indicated once the cataract becomes significantly cloudy.
A: Modern cataract surgery is efficient. In general, most patients are at the surgery center 90-120 minutes, including pre- and post-operative time.
A: Most people report that there is no pain during or after cataract surgery. Occasionally one experiences a scratchy sensation (like an eyelash in the eye) and mild soreness for about 24 hours after surgery.
A: Eating a balanced diet including fresh fruits and vegetables, not smoking, and protecting one’s eyes from the sun’s UV rays are some steps that may slow the growth of cataracts.
