Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts are incredibly common in older adults. More than 50% of Americans will develop visually significant cataracts by the age of 80. Cataract symptoms include:

  • Cloudy or blurry vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Poor night vision, including halos
  • Needing brighter lights to read
  • Yellowing and dimming of colors
  • Frequent prescription changes

These symptoms may be hardly noticeable at first, but as a cataract develops the effects steadily worsen. Over time cataracts will lead to more severe vision loss, and patients may find themselves unable to perform activities like drive, read, or even watch TV.

Cataract Diagnosis and Management

The beginnings of a cataract can be detected and diagnosed during a full comprehensive eye exam. In the early stages, cataracts can be managed by adjusting the patient’s prescription, using brighter reading lights, and avoiding certain activities like driving at night. The only permanent way to treat vision loss from cataracts is to undergo cataract surgery.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most common surgical procedures in the world. At Eye Consultants of Atlanta, our experienced cataract surgeons use the latest techniques and technology to perform cataract surgery. We share our knowledge and expertise with each other, and our combined experience exceeds 200 years! Our doctors all provide a custom, hands- on approach. We use the latest technical advancements to optimize patient success. From pre- surgical testing, intra-operative tools and techniques, and careful post- operative care, we perform each step with the greatest of care and attention.

During cataract surgery, the clouded natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). While basic intraocular lenses simply replace the lens and usually necessitate the use of corrective eyewear for some or all visual tasks, more advanced implants, also called Advanced Technology Intraocular Lenses (ATIOLs), provide more expanded vision while decreasing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses. Advanced Technology IOL’s offer patients a reduced dependence on glasses and contact lenses, and often allow patients to avoid glasses altogether.

Our best-in-class presurgical analyses help us customize care with precision, and guides important decisions such as procedure plan and lens implant selection. Our team uses the most modern, proven techniques and equipment to optimize comfort and recovery.

Traditional cataract surgery utilizes an ultrasound-based procedure with a proven track record of safety and excellent results. Your doctor will perform state-of-the-art tests prior to the surgery, and will help guide you to select the approach that’s best for you.

Advanced Technology Lens

While standard IOLs are monofocal — that is, they provide clear vision at just one distance — an advanced technology lens can do much more by greatly reducing or eliminating the need for glasses after surgery. We carry a variety of advanced technology lens options, including presbyopia-correcting IOLs and toric IOLs.

Before undergoing cataract surgery, our cataract surgeons sit down with every patient to discuss their needs and determine which IOL will be the best fit for their lifestyle.
